29 July 1988 The Hon. William Donald Schaefer Governor State House Annapolis, Maryland 21404

Dear Governor Schaefer:

Maryland United for Peace and Justice, a networking coalition of over 70 groups and individuals working on peace and justice issues, would like to urge you to do all that you can to achieve a permanent shutdown of the Peach Bottom nuclear power plant.

Pench Bottom, we feel is a serious threat to the safety and health of the citizens of Maryland, for four reasons:

1. Infant mortality and the incidence of cancer increased during its operation (and have decreased since its shutdown),
2. Its containment system is deficient (according to the NRC),
3. The presence of a newly identified generic safety problem (present in all G.E. reactors - neutron flux oscillations peaking well over design capacity) make it even more dangercus that thought before, and
4. Strong doubt as to the adequacy of reform or assured pmEciency, given PECo's long history of mismanagement and the lack cf credibility of the NRC.

For all these reasons, we ask you to pebet the lives of m!.11 ions of Marylanders, who would be adversely affected by a disaster at Peach Borto=,

by assuring the permanent shutdown of this nuclear plant.

Sincerely yours, M A /h.sw&
