Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary June 2020

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for June 2020. This month we captured 28 Caretta caretta and one Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There was one mortality (non-causal) and no turtles were sent for rehabilitation during the month of June. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and stranding forms were filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

There was one non-causal mortality this past month. On June 29th, a severely decomposed subadult loggerhead was found on the bottom of the intake canal during a snorkel survey. This turtle had not been previously observed in the canal. Moreover, the animal was most likely entrained postmortem since it was in an advanced state of decomposition and was not seen even during recent in-water surveys of the intake canal.

The primary 5-inch barrier net encountered light amounts of algae throughout the month. On June 15th, Underwater Engineering Services performed the quarterly net inspections on the first two barrier nets (the 5-inch and 8-inch A-1-A); no holes were found during the quarterly net inspections. Altogether, the primary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5 inch net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2020. In addition, this spreadsheet tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.

12. Adult female loggerhead. Tail length = 245 mm. Deep moderate fresh scrape above left eye.
13. Adult female green turtle. Tail length = 236 mm. Arc-shaped shark bite in dorsal side of left rear flipper.

Turtle also has three extra scutes (two costal and one vertebral).

14. DEAD (NON-CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# STW200629-01. Severely decomposed subadult loggerhead found on bottom of intake canal during snorkel survey. Turtle had not been seen prior to today. Most likely entrained postmortem since it was in an advanced state of decomposition and was not even seen during recent in-water surveys of the intake canal. Weight estimated at ~45 kg.
