Since the beginning of the Nuclear Age, the explosion of the two atomic bombs on Japan in 1945, and the years of testing nuclear weapons around the world to the splitting atoms to boil water in nuclear reactors, humans have been dealing with the toxic waste and the damage it does to health, environment and property.

The answer is not to transport the over 100.000 tons of high-level radioactive waste From the 129 reactors in the U.S. to Consolidated Interim Storage in Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico or anywhere else. Every mode of transport: rail, truck or barge has risk and will be traveling through cities large and small, will have to be exchanged from one mode to another along the routes.

Final or interim destinations will be in areas where the citizens do not want this very hazardous material dumped on them for an indeterminate amount of time, possibly hundreds of years!

The sites of generation must be fortified with the most robust, safe as possible, containment buildings, containers/casks, security, monitoring and testing capability.

If and when there is a final repository that is scientifically proven to be safe for long-term containment (forever) then transporting all the waste would be prudent but not until then.

The public must be included in any matters and or decisions regarding the process of transport, storage, environmental and health impacts. This must include risk assessment and how accidental releases of radioactivity would be handled.
