[External_Sender] Public Comment to NRC My name is Gene Harbaugh. I am a retired Presbyterian pastor who has lived in Eddy county for the past 34 years and am active in community affairs.
Here is my comment on the HOLTEC request for approval of its application:
"The proposed project may be viewed as safe, beneficial economically, and even free from accidental release of radioactive material. ( However, because my residence is within 200 years of a rail siding through which the waste could pass or be held, I question the safety of the transportation method. I have observed two derailments at this site within the past two years.)
The project may be viewed as having "small impact" on the environment. It may be argued that only those "outsiders" who do not live in the area oppose it.
All of that is beside the point on this issue. The reality is that this facility will likely become a permanent installation, since the national consensus is to NOTcreate a permanent one. The implementation of this proposed project will provide incentive to develop more and more such waste facilities so that the nuclear industry can continue to produce an unlimited amount of a highly dangerous toxic material that poses a long term threat to the health of the nation. We must simply desist from this form of profiteering.
All people in the nation have a stake in this issue. And any industry that profits from the production of a waste so toxic that it requires 10,000 years to mitigate its effect, should be prohibited from producing such material.
Our land in New Mexico, as all land, has dignity. This proposal imposes an indignity upon the land and its people that is more severe than the current world pandemic which will run its course over a few years rather than thousands of years.".
