SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MAY 6, 2020, CLOSED PRE-SUBMITTAL MEETING WITH ARES SECURITY CORPORATION REGARDING A FORTHCOMING TOPICAL REPORT ON THE USE OF MODELING AND SIMULATION IN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT SECURITY ASSESSMENT On May 6, 2020, a closed pre-submittal meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and ARES Security Corporation (ARES). During the meeting, ARES briefed the NRC staff on its intention to submit a topical report in calendar year 2021 to garner NRC approval for nuclear power plants to use the Automated Vulnerability Evaluation for Risks of Terrorism (AVERT) modeling and simulation software. The meeting notice and agenda, dated April 24, 2020, are in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML20115E544 (non-public). A list of attendees is enclosed.

The ARES presentation material is in ADAMS (Accession No. ML20139A116; proprietary, non-public). ARES provided an overview of the project, including a brief history of the use of security modeling and simulation software, and the current state of physical security and its challenges at nuclear power plants. ARES detailed how its AVERT software can be used within the current regulatory structure and can enhance physical security at nuclear power plants.
