Docket 50-186 University of Missouri

SUBJECT:

Change to University of Missouri Research Reactor Facility License No. R-103.

Dear Sir:

The University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) requests an amendment to the Facility License No. R-103. We request a change be made to Section 2.B.(4) regarding allowed amounts of source material. Our proposed amendment is:

2.B.(4) Pursuant to the Act and 10CFR40, " Licensing of Source Material", to receive, possess, and use in connection with the operation of the reactor up to 20 kilograms each of normal uranium and thorium and up to 100 kilo-grams of depleted uranium for instructional and experi-mental purposes.

Our present license allows possession of up to 20 kilograms each of normal uranium, depleted uranium, and thorium. Our R-103 current source material inventory includes 0 kg of normal uranium,18 kg of depleted uranium, and 2 kg of thorium. (8 kg of normal uranium at MURR is held under the University License SNM-247.)

Director May 21, 1986 Page 2 Dr. R. M. Brugger, Director of MURR, wishes to acquire a bar of depleted uranium approximately 1.1 inches in diameter and 40 inches long .

.with mass 12 kg. The purpose of this is to filter < .01 eV and > 10. eV neutrons.from a beam to study the effects of few-eV neutrons for therapy.

We are requesting a large enough increase in our allowed depleted uranium inventory to cover this and possible future filter acquisitions.

Sincerely,
