Keppler Regional Administrator U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road - Region III Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 Subj ect: Byron Station Unit 2 IE Inspection Report 50-455/85-027 NRC Docket No. 50-455 Reference (a): January 24, 1986 letter from D. L. Farrar to J. G. Keppler

Dear Mr. Keppler:

Reference (a) provided Commonwealth Edison's response to the findings of the NRC Construction Appraisal Team (CAT) inspection conducted

- at Byron Station, Unit 2 on August 19-30, and September 9-20, 1985. This letter provides supplemental information concerning the response to a violation that resulted from the inspection.

Violation 2 contal:ied an item regarding undersized welds in tanks and heat exchangers. Hunter Corp. NR 1148 was issued to address the nonconforming welds. The engineering disposition of Hunter Corp. NR 1148 has beer. completed and the welds have been found acceptable.

Violation 2 also contained an item regarding fasteners for large pump -motor assemblies. Discrepancies were found regarding assembly and mounting bolts. With respect to the non-safety related positive displacement charging pump, further analysis has shown that the existing motor-to-base bolts are acceptable. Therefore, these bolts will not be replaced as originally planned. The engineering analysis of the motor end-to-pump base bolts on the RHR pumps (2RH01PA and 2RH0lPB) and the motor-to-skid bolts on centrifugal charging pump 2CVolPB has been completed. These installed bolts have also been found acceptable.

Please direct any questions you may have regarding this matter to this office.
