Dear Mr. King;'aj-
On October ;i, *.898, the NRC completed an inspection of the radiation protection program at
t
your Byron Generating Station, Units 1 and 2. The results of this inspection were discussed on
that date with Mr. Levis and other members of your staff. The enclosed report presents the
results of that inspection.
The inspection was an examination of activities conducted under your license as they relate to
radiation safety and to compliance with the Commission's rules and regulations and with the
conditions of your license. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective
examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with personnel, ano
observation of activities in progress. Specifically, the inspection was a review of the
as-low-as-is-reasonably-achievable (ALARA) planning and radiation work permit programs, and
the whole body counting and screening programs. In addition several open items were
reviewed and closed.
Based on the results of this inspection, no violations of NRC requirements were identified. The
NRC has determined that the ALARA planning, radiation work permit, and the whole body
' counting and screening programs were effectively implemented. However, the inspeciors
= observed poor housekeeping in the radioactive waste building and noted a large amo'Jnt of
processed waste stored there. This was discussed with your staff during the inspection and it is
our understanding that actions are being implemented to improve the condition of the
radioactive waste building. We will continue to monitor your efforts in this area.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its
enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
