By letter dated October 16,1998, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) amended LGS NPDES Permit No. PA0051926 authorizing an increase in the usage rates

for chemical additives Inhibitor AZ8104, Depositrol PY5206, and Spectrus BD1500. These chemical additives are used for controlling corrosion, scaling, and algae growth in the secondary cooling water systems at LGS. The NRC was previously notified of our request to revise the

/

NPDES permit to increase the usage rates of these chemicals by letter dated October 14,1998.

Accordingly, this letter provides the required notification of a change to the NPDES permit and is l

being submitted within 30 days of the permitting agency's approval in accordance with the requirements of the LGS EPP. A copy of the PA DEP letter amending the LGS NPDES permit is attached.

Dear Mr. Matty:

This is in response to your October 14,1998 letter, requesting an approval to use chemical additive (s): AZ8104; PY 5206 and BD 1500 for controlling corrosion, scaling and algae growth in the cooling water system at the Limerick Generating Station at usage rates higher than were approved by the Department on September 18,1998.

We have completed our review and hereby approve your request. The wastewater will continue to discharge on an average rate of 14.27 mgd to Schuylkill River through Outfall 001. The approval is subject to the following conditions:

Discharge containing chemical additives to control corrosion, scaling, algae, slime, fouling, oxygen, etc., shall be managed by the permittee to ensure thu toxic effects in the receiving stream are prevented. Usage rates shall be limited to the miaimum amount necessary to accomplish the intended purposes of chemical addition.

Accurate records of usage (name of additive, quantity added, date added) of the approved chemical additive and blow down discharge volumes must be maintained and kept onsite by the permittee. The chemical additives will be included in the NPDES permit upon its next renewal.
