MEETING
SUMMARY
FOR THE SEMI. ANNUAL MEETING 0F THE AWS l
STRUCTURAL WELDING COMMITTEE I attended the semi. annual meeting of the American Welding Society (AWS). D1.1 Structural Welding Comittee in Nashville from September 28 to October 1,1988 as a committee vice-chairman and as chairman of the Acceptance Criteria Task Group and the Qualifications Subcomittee.
The next edition of the Structural Welding Code will be in 1990 and significant actions are listed below:
Effective this fall, the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) will require 350*F preheat for full penetration welds on flanges thick r than 2 inches.
Charpy-impact testing will be required for the flange material, and cope and access holes must be ground smooth.
1 Concerning the qualifications of welders for rectangular tubing, the mandatory open-root test now permits melt.thru at the root.
The subcomittee approved a fillet weld test option for material thinner than 3/8 inch. The complementary groove weld test is being developed.
The subcomittee approved the measurement of the wire feed travel speed as an alternate to the rapidly fluctuating current.
Electrode extension will become an essential variable.
The task group simplified requirements and recommended that:
1.
undercut not exceed 1/32 in, for material less than 1 in, thick, but 1/16 in, undercut is allowed for 2 in, in any 12 inches.
2.
the minimum size for porosity becomes 1/32 inch.
/
3.
maximum convexity be 1/16 inch for fillet welds smaller than
[q 5/16 in. and 1/8 in, for larger fj)let elds f
