Dear Mr. If cDo nald The University of Texas is presently planning to con-struct (CPRR-123) a TRIGA reictor facility (docket #50-602)

~

at the Balcones Research Center approximately 8 miles from the present licensed location (docketcf50-192, license R-92).

Assuming funding ap' proval' expected in April and a construction time of 18 months ~ started in' June, a projected fuel shipment date would be November 1987.or later.

At that time 151 TRIGA elements in four shipments are to be transferred from the present facility (docket #50-192) to the new facility (docket #50-602).

The present facility will be subsequently dismantled (see docket #50-192).

Although the owner, oper'ator and personnel for the two facilities will be the same, the technical requirement for the shipper to maintain a QA plan will require the amendment of the current approval (as part of docket #50-192) or a new applicatiom It should be noted that the docket #50-602 application includes the approval of a QA program that will be applicable to that license when 1s-sued.

Since we do.not anticipate any shipments until the late 1987 time frame, the immediate renewal of the current approval is not necessary.

However, your help in determin-ing the most effective approach, i.e.,

renewal, resubmit-tal, or acceptance of docket.#50-602 material for docket

  1. 50-192 activities, would.be appreciated.

Sincerely, S
