Subject:

Revisal of tentativo LEU Conversion Schedulo for the University of Virginia Reactor (UVAR)

Facility License No. R-66, Docket 50-62 Gentlemon:

In March 1988 the management of the University of Virginia Reactor Facility prepared and sont to the NRC a conversion schedule for its UVAR reactor.

It was made clear at that time that the schedule's milestones were tentatively sot, and that delays in its execution woro probable.

The schedulo called for the romittance to the NRC of the U.Va. application to convert in September, 1988.

HLvover, the application to convert will not be remitted at this tiae, since we are still awaiting DOE notification of the availability of conversion funds relative to fuel fabrication, and dates f v the availability of a full LEU coro loading and a spent fuel nh: aing cask.

We are also awaiting final fuel olomont dravi."3 from EG&G and soveral dummy fuel elements from B&W for test fitting in our core's grid plate.

Regrottably, those agencies do, tot operate on fixed and announced schedules.

Progress towar:Is conversion continues to be made.

Neutronic and thermal hydraulic analyses for 18, 20 and 22 plate fuel olomonts are currently being concluded and checked by the UVAR staff.

Also, RERTR personnel at ANL are at this moment verifying the U.VA. neutronics calculations.

The scheduling of the HEU fuel shipments continues to be negotiated.

A revised schedule will be provided by Virginia to the NRC as required by law in March 1989, or sooner should some of the above dates be fixed.
