' October 29, 1998 Mr. Arden C. Scroggs, Manager Industrial Licensing and Compliance Division of Radiation Protection Department of Health State of Washington Airdustrial Center, Bldg. 5 P.O. Box 47827 Olympia, WA 98504-7827
Dear Mr. Srcoggs,
Reference:
Registration No. WA-0729-S-101-S in your letter dated June 12,1998, you informed NRC that the sealed source registration certificate with No. WA-0729-S-101-S should be placed in the inactive file system because the State of Washington had made the source inactive in the 1980's but had not informed NRC about the inactivation. Please note that we have placed the registration certificate in the file of inactive sealed sources and devices under registration No. WA-8105-S-801-S with a cover page indicating the inactive status. For your information I attached a copy of the document package, as it will appear in the file system. Please read over the documents and notify us immediately if there are any errors or omissions..
NRC practice is to assign a different registration number to sealed sources and devices when they are made inactive in order to differentiate the active and inactive registrations from each other. Specifically, when a company, vendor, or distributor no longer has an active registration certificate, the vendor code is changed to be between 800 and 1000 or between 8000 and 9000. Similarly, when a source or a device becomes inactive, we assign a number starting with 801 for inactive registration certificates. The details of the NRC practice to assign registration certificate numbers are described in the document " Consolidated Guidance About Materials
' Licenses: Applications for Sealed Source and Device Evaluation and Registration," NUREG-1556, Vol. 3., Appendix 1.
If you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 415-7904 or Mr. Steven Baggett at (301) 415-7273.
l Sincerely, John WJankovich, Ph.D., Sr. Engineer Materials Safety Branch
