UDALL C0tNITTEE HEARINGS ON JUNE 25 AND 28 o A . We have been infonned by the Staff of the Subcomittee on Energy V ,'and the Environment that the hearings on Nuclear Waste Storage and Regulation. scheduled for June 25 and 28 have been postponed. .,Instead, the Subcomittee intends to hold oversight hearings on the Agreement States Programs on June 25 and Public Participation and State a -Veto on Waste Managment on June 28., For the hearings.on June 25, 'the Subcomittee has. invited an NRC representative and the. governors of North Carolina, Arizone and - Kentucky or their representatives. The Comissioners are not' required to attend. The NRC should prepare written testimony describing the Agreement States' program. In addition, the Subcomittee will be interested in hearing about the problems encountered in administering the program; how consistent are state regulations with NRC regulations and; in view of the fact that the perception of radiation hazards has changed, has our criteria for transferring ,g' authority to the states cha,nged.. .On June 28, the Subdomittee has invited an NRC representative,

a. DOE representative, Mr. ' Michael O' Hare, MIT, a representative of the National Governors conference and a Member of the Keystone a

~.. Group..The Commissioners are not required to attend. NRC testimony should include NRC recommendations concerning state and local participation in licensing procedures for waste disposal sites and NRC views on a11'owing states to set waste disposal . standards and site criteria. ~ Written t'estimony for the June 25 hearing should be submitted by EDO to OCA on June 21. Written testimony,for the June 28 hearing should be submitted to OCA on June 25.
