" Radiation Survey Report of the L-85 Reactor Facility Following Dismantlement and Decontamination of the Facility, Docket No. 50-375"

Dear fir. Denton:

The Rockwell International L-85 nuclear examination reactor covered by Facility License No. R-118 has been dismantled and decontaminated in accord with dismantling plans previously transmitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. With our letter of January 8, 1986, referenced above, we submitted a report of the final radiation survey of the facility which presented data to show that the radiation levels in the facility met the requirements described in the dismantling plans.

In subsequent discussions with the staff in t.ie Region V office of

.NRC, concerns were expressed regarding the appropriateness of using NaI (TI) scintillation detectors for measuring the radiation fields in the facility. To provide higher quality data and result in more accu-rate measurements of the radiaticn fields, the scintillation detectors were calibrated with two Reuter-Stokes high-pressure ion chambers, and the fields were comprehensively remeasured with those calibrated scintillation detectors.

flarc 1986 Rockwell Page 2 International The report of the final radiation survey has been revised to include the results of these improved measurements, and we are now confident that the decontaminated facility meets the requirements described in the dismantling plans. Seven copies of the revised report are enclosed for your information and review. Following your review, we request that the facility be inspected by representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, that License No. R-118 be terminated, and the facility be released for unrestricted use.

If you have questions or need further information, please call me at (818) 700-4270.
