Dear Governor Geringer:

I am pleased to acknowlee :e receipt of your August 19,1998 letter to Chairman Shirley Ann Jackson of the U.S. Nucle:- Regulatory Commission (NRC). Your letter forwarded copies of four recently adopted Western Governors' Association (WGA) policy resolutions of special interest and requested NRC's response and opinions regarding the resolutions.

The WGA policy resolutions principally address issues concerning the transportation of spent I nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. Regulating transportation activities associated with spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste is a responsibility shared by a number of different Federal agencies including the NRC. NRC's transportation activities are closely  ;

coordinated with those of the Department of Transportation and, as appropriate, with the Department of Energy and the Federal Emergerecy Management Agency. Based on our review, l NRC has no specific comments at this time.

The NRC appreciates receiving the WGA policy resolutions and will consider them, as appropriate, in addressing these important issues.
