Dear Mr. Rosen:

I would like to personally thank you for your presentation on September 15,1998, at the U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Headquarters on the uses of probabilistic risk assessment at South Texas Project, Units 1 and 2. After seeing your presentation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, I realized how valuable this information would be to the NRC staff. The information you presented on September 15 was both insightful and informative and was well received.

As I know you are aware, risk-informed and performance-based regulations are among the NRC's highest priority issues. In the next few months, we have a number of initiatives planned in this area that will demonstrate our commitment to regulatory effectiveness. Your presentation helped to provide examples of industry applications, which will serve us well as the agency continues its transition to a risk-informed framework.

I believe this mini-workshop was a continuing example of NRC and the nuclear industry working together to be more effective in all regulatory issues. Thank you for taking the time to brief the NRC staff. I look forward to working with you in the future.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY:
