Maine Yankee Seismic Review Program Gentlemen:
On February 19, 1986 we discussed the possibility of Maine Yankee participating in a NRC sponsored research program on seismic margins in nuclear power plants. Our understanding of the program is summarized below.
An evaluation will be performed of Maine Yankee's equipment required to achieve and maintain hot shutdown to determine the seismic margin in such equipment to withstand a larger than design basis earthquake up to a magnitude of approximately 0.3g.
The evaluation will be performed by comparing Maine Yankee equipment to similar equipment in engineered, but not necessarily seismically designed, facilities that have undergone actual earthquakes with little or no damage.
This research program will be in lieu of a NRC review of Maine Yankee's seismic review program. Following the completion of this research program, the tEC will issue a Safety Evaluation which documents the resolution of the seismic issue for Maine Yankee.
