The Commission
- was briefed by the staff on a proposed rule requiring engineering degreed reactor operators at nuclear power plants and other options to assure technical expertise and professionalism at nuclear facilities.
Chairman Zech requested his fellow Commissioners to consider the staff's recommendations in SECY-88-245 and in their vote sheets make recommendations to bring this long-standing issue to closure.
Commissioner Rogers also requested the staff, on a separate matter, to assess alternative means by which the Commission could encourage and ensure higher levels of operator status and recognition as professionals at nuclear power plants.
Examples of such means include the development of a transportable operator's license, and national accreditation of INPO operator training programs.
