CRACKING IN HIGH PRESSURE INJECTION LINES IN NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS
Dear Mr. Cozens:
In followup to recent conversations between NEl and NRC staff, please find enclosed several papers and documents pertaining to the issue of cracking in high pressure injection (HPI) lines in nuclear power plants.
The enclosed papers discuss the broader class of issues associated with metal fatigue in light water reactor piping caused by thermal cycling due to unanticipated stratification and mixing of hot and cold water. The issue of cracking of HPl lines is a subset of this class, and is therefore not exclusively addressed in these papers, other than the NRC Information Notice 97-46, "Unisolable Crack in High-Pressure injection Piping."
