Your letter dated October 22, 1987 requested information related to the storage and movement of thorium contaminated soil at the Stepan Chemical Company's Maywood Division. You requested copies of documents and asked several questions.

You asked whether any legal action was taken as a result of the unlicensed burial pit. Two actions were taken. First Stepan Chemical was required add the pit to License No. STC-1333. Second,sInceacompanyofficialwithheld information about the burial location from NRC inspectors, the company was fined $20,000. Copies of the correspondence concerning the fine are enclosed for your information.
