SUBJECT:
NRC RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION REPORT 50-341/98016(DRS)
' Dear Mr. Gipson:
On September 18,1998, the NRC completed an inspection at your Enrico Fermi, Unit 2 facility.
The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.
L
The inspection was an examination of activities conducted under your license as they relate to
radiation safety, to compliance with the Commission's rules and regulations, and with the
conditions of your license. The purpose of this inspection was to review the as-low-as-is-
reasonably-achievable (ALARA) planning and controls for your sixth refueling outage (RFO6);
internal exposure monitoring; radiological surveys and postings; radiation worker performance;
l
and the control of high, locked high and very high radiation areas. Within these areas, the
inspection consisted of a selective examination of procedures and representative records,
observations of activities and equipment materiel condition, and interviews with personnel.
.
No violations of NRC requirements were identified.
!
- Effective ALARA planning and controls were implemented for those RFO6 activities observed
during this inspection. The intemal exposure program was well implemented and radiological
postings, radiation protection technician job coverage and worker performance were considered
good. High, locked high, and very high radiation areas were also well controlled. However,
L
some problems were observed with housekeeping and material condition inside the waste
!
clarifier tank room, with radiological access control between the Reactor and Turbine buildings
and with some workers' whole body frisking practices. These problems were being corrected by
your staff during the inspection.
p
in accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter, its
L
enclosures, and your response to this letter will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room
(PDR).
