SUBJECT:

NRC RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION REPORTS 50-266/98018(DRS);

50-301/98018(DRS) _

i

Dear Mr. Reddemann:

On September 4,1998, the NRC completed an inspection of the radiation protection program at

_

your Point Beach Nuclear Plant. The results of this inspection were discussed on that date with

Mr. Mende and other members of your staff. The enclosed report presents the results of that

inspection.

The purpose of the inspection was to review portions of the radiation protection program,

including the portable instrument control and calibration programs, the whole body counter

operation program, and the contamination survey and monitoring program, in addition, several

open items regarding the instrument calibration program, and control of high radiation and

locked high radiation areas were reviewed and closed.

Based on the results of this inspection, no violations of NRC requirements were identified.

Overall, the whole body counter, and the contamination survey and monitoring programs were

well implemented. The portable instrument calibration and control program was adequately

implemented. The instrument calibration and control program self assessment was thorough

and corrective actions were being developed and implemented for the identified deficiencies.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its

enclosure will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR).
