CATEGORICAL EXCLUSION FOR AMEN 0 MENT REQUEST DATED MARCH 21, 1988 By letter dated March 21, 1988, GE requested an amendment to License No.

SNM-1097 to authorize the transfer of test quantities of calcium fluoride (CaF 7

) containing trace quantities of uranium to vendors for testing. The vendors will mix the CaF, with other materials to form briquettes used as a fluxing agency in steel rocessing or bricks for the construction industry.

The CaF,, contains trace quantities of enriched uranium. Concentrations are below the 30 pCi/gm limit specified in Option 1 of the NRC's Branch Technical Position for unrestricted release. The reuse of the calcium fluoride will not result in an adverse impact to humans and/or the environment. Therefore, the staff has concluded that the following conditions have been met:

1. There is no significant change in the type or significant increase in the amount of any efflutats that may be released offsite,

2. There is no significant increase in individual or cumulative occupational radiation exposure,

3. There is no significant construction impact, and

4. There is no significant increase in the potential for or consequences from radiological accidents.
