SUBJECT: NRC ROUTINE RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION REPORTS

50-456/98013(DRS); 50-457/98013(DRS) l

l

Dear Mr. Kingsley: )

1

'

On August 14,1998, the NRC completed an inspection at your Braidwood Generating

Station, Units 1 and 2. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.

The inspection was an examination of activities conducted under your license as they relate

to radiation safety and to compliance with the Commission's rules and regulations and with

the conditions of your license. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective

examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with personnel, and

observation of activities in progress. Specifically, the inspection focused on your chemistry

[ program and your preparation for the radiological challenge: of the steam generator  ;

l replacement project. No violations of NRC requirements were identified. ,

t i

~

! .The radiation protection preparation for the steam generator replacement project was

appropriate and addressed the radiological hazards associated with the project. We also

observed good communications and coordination between the station radiation protection I

group and the contract radiation protection personnel.

L Chemistry program performance was adequate with strengths noted in the water chemistry

programs and the laboratory comparison programs. Both technicians and chemists were

knowledgeable of procedural and program requirements. Improvements from the last NRC '

chemistry inspection were observed in post accident sampling processes and the quality

p control program.
