MEMORANDUM FOR:

B. Youngblood, Project Director PWR Project Directorate #4 Division of Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR)

Licensing-A, NRR FROM:

W. T. Crow, Acting Chief Uranium Fuel Licensing Branch Division of Fuel Cycle and Material Safety, NMSS

SUBJECT:

DUKE POWER COMPANY PROVISION FOR CRITICALITY ALARM REQUIREMENT ANALYSIS DATED DECEMBER 17, 1985, (CATAWBA, UNIT 2)

Duke Power, in the subject letter to Mr. Harold R. Denton, described its coverage of the fuel assembly storage and handling areas by two detectors: (1) a single radiation monitor is provided on the refueling bridge, and (2) a temporary additional radiation monitor.

If these monitors are capable of detecting a criticality that produces an absorbed dose in soft tissue of 20 rads of combined neutron and gamma radiation at an unshielded distance of 2 meters from the reacting material in 1 minute, the requirements of Part 70.24(a)(1) are met.
