Februm / 26, 1986 Docket No. 99900277/86-01 The Rockbestos Company A Member of the Marmon Group ATTN: Mr. R. S. Thayer General Manager Post Office Drawer 1102 New Haven, Connecticut 06504 Gentlemen:

This refers to the inspection conducted by Mr. S. D. Alexander of this office on January 21-22, 1986 of your facility at New Haven, Connecticut and to the discussions of our findings with Mr. G. G. Littlehales and other members of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection.

The inspection covered by this report is part of a series in which the NRC is closely follcwing the requalification program you are conducting on currently manufactured cable for safety-related service in nuclear power plants. While the NRC is observing testing and reviewing documentation to verify compliance with regulatory requirements, the responsibility for evaluation of results and determination of qualification for particular plant applications remains with the individual licensees.

The purpose of this inspection was to observe post loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) simulation testing on RSS-6-100 series coaxial, twinaxial and triaxial adverse nuclear service cable samples, review related documentation and review your corrective actions in response to our previous inspection findings. Areas examined during the inspection and our findings are discussed in the enclosed report. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of an examination of procedures and representative records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the inspector.

Within the scope of this inspection, we found no instance in which you failed to meet NRC requirements. However, there were test anomalies which will require investigation and there remain several open items which will be reviewed during future inspcctions.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Comnission's regulations, a copy of this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC's Public Document Room.
