SUBJECT:

CLOSE-0VT OF MPA B-98, "STEAM BINDING OF AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMPS" Generic letter 88-03 was issued February 17, 1988 requesting owners of PWRs to confirm that appropriate procedures are in place, and will be maintained, to minimize the occurrence of steam binding of the auxiliary feedwater pumps.

A memorandum from Frank J. Miraglia dated February 17, 1988 stated that, in most cases, the Project Manager should be able to review the response without assistance.

After completing the review, a letter should be sent to the licensee. Attached is a sample letter. The TAC associated with MPA B-98 can be closed with the issuance of this letter.

GENERIC LETTER 88-03, "STEAM BINDING OF AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMPS (TACNOS.

)

On February 17, 1988, Generic Letter 88-03 was issued and requested all licensees of operating PWRs and holders of construction permits for PWRs to confirm that appropriate procedures are in place, and will be maintained, to minimize the occurrence of steam binding of the auxiliary feedwater (AFW) pumps. The procedures require monitoring fluid conditions within the AFW system each shif t during times when the system is required to be operable, and recogni:ing steam binding and restoring the AFW system to operable status should steam binding occur.
