%, ~ '- ' g / April 6, 1988 CHAIRMAN The Honorable llorris X. Udall, Chairman Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs United States House of Representatives Washington, D. C. 20515

Dear Mr. Chairman:

This is to inform you that the Commission is establishing an independent advisory committee to provide us with advice and recommendations concerning all aspects of nuclear waste management within the purview of our regulatory responsibilities. We are taking this action in recognition of the importance that we place on the safe management of radioactive waste. The committee is to be named the Advisory '

Committee on Nuclear Waste {ACNW). The Commission and the NRC staff will work with the committee to establish priorities among the various technical topics associated with nuclear waste on which the Commission will seek the advice of the ACNW.

i Because the ACNW will absorb the responsibility for the review of nuclear waste issues currently exercised by the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS), the new committee will utilize existing ACRS staff assigned to the review of these issues. We believe that this approach will not only conserve our limited budget resources, but will also provide a more focused treatment of the issues that each committee is charged to address.

The Commission has asked Dr. Dade Moeller and Dr. Martin Steindler to serve on the ACNW. We are fortunate that these two distinguished scientists are willine to serve on the new committee.

The Commission has approved the new committee's charter, a copy of which is enclosed. The charter is being reviewed by the General Services Administra ion in accordance with the requirements of the Federal Advisory Committee Act.  ;
