I THREE MILE ISLAhD AQUATIC STUDY MONTHLY REPORT FOR JANUARY l986 Prepa red f or GPU Nuclear Corporation P. O. Box 460 Route 441 South Middletown, Pennsylvania 17057 Prepared by EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc.

INTRODUCTION The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the conradiological (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.1.1.a(4), 3.1.2.a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical Specifications (ETS).
These programs have been carried out as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual.
Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic mac roinve rteb ra tes, ic h thyopl ankton, fish population dynamics (seine and electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality.
The ultimate purpose of these studies is to obtain a database suf ficient to establish the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant biological alterations resulting f rom the TMINS.
Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in January. Field work requirements described in the ETS and asscciated with the 1985 sampling season were completed as of 26 November.
No collections were made during January.
Data presented in this report are considered provisional, pending subse-quent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual repor t.
Water Ouality Analysis Ob i ec t ive :
To measure select physical and chemical parameters of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS) concurrent with General Ecological Survey samples.
Progress:
Water quality data collected during 1985 were entered and computer generated sunmary tables were completed.
1 2
Benthic Macroinvertebrates Obiective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity of TMINS.
Proeress:
Laboratcry sorting, identification, and biomass determination was completed for all benthos collected on 10 Sept embe r, 2 8 Oc t obe r, and 12 November. Key punching of April, May, June, and July data was comple ted.
Benthos data f rom Augu s t, Sept e=be r, Oc tobe r, and November were prepared for keypunching.
Ichthvoelanktan 05 i ec t ive : To de termine species composition, relative abundance, density, seasonal and spatial distribution of ichthyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of TMINS.
Prcgress:
Ichthyoplankton field sampling for the 1985 season was completed with the 28 August collection.
Laboratory idco-tification/cabulation of all ichthyoplankton collected on 5, 19, and 26 June was completed. April, May, and June ichthyo-
/
plankton data were coded and prepared for computer entry.
Seine 05iective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spa tial distribution, condition f actor, occur-rence of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.
e-3
Prorress: All fishes taken by seine on 24 April, 9 and 23 May, 4 and 18 June, 9 July, and 9 August were identified,
weighed, and measured.
These data were subsequently tallied, coded, and prepared for computer entry.
Electrofishing 05 i ec t ive :
To assess species composition, relative abundance, occurrence of parasites, anomalies, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.
Progress: All 1985 electrofishing data were computerized.
proof ed, and s u=cary runs were initiated.
Greel Survey 05iective: To investigate the extent of success of sport-fishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, in the Susquehanna River near TMINS.
Progress:
Creel survey data tables were proofed and prepared for presentation in the 1985 Annual Report.
