50-328 SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT (SQN) - REVISION TO POSTRESTART SCOPE AND SCHEDULE FOR DESIGN CONTROL SYSTEM

Reference:

TVA letter to NRC dated December 15, 1987 In the referenced letter, TVA revised the completion schedule for the safety-related system design criteria.

TVA had anticipated completing this work by March 31, 1988. All of the safety-related design criteria, except the radiation monitoring system, have been revised and are currently under final review by the engineering branches.

The bulk of the effort is complete.

The remaining work involves completion of the reviews, resolution of comments, and formal issuance.

This work will be completed by May 31, 1988.

The radiation monitoring system design criteria have not been issued yet; however, they will be completed by June 30, 1988.

The revised commitments are listed in the enclosure to this letter.

The previous schedule was established on the basis of an earlier restart of unit 2.

Delays in the restart of unit 2 and the continued use of resources on the restart effort have impeded progress on the design criteria project.

In addition, work on the radiation monitoring system design criteria has been constrained because of the limited availability of personnel with the specialized expertise required for the work and the budget constraints that have precluded contracting the work.

If you have any further questions, please telephone M. J. Burzynski at (615) 870-6172.

Very truly yours, TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY M-R. Gridley, Di ector Nuclear Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Enclosure 9
