Dear Lloyd Bentsen I am concerned about the tssue of the Fermi 2 and the fifteen other nuclear power plants in Michigan.
A report released in December 1985 claims that a
the primary containment structure at the sixteen plants vould fail within forty to 120 minutes if a reactor core meltdown occurred.
The report was i
~
developed by thirty-nine scientists working for the federal Nuclear Re ula-w tory Commission.
The primary containment structure, called the Mark 1, designed by General Electric Co.,
is said to be unsafe for a nuclear l
operation.
The concrete and steel containment structure is designed to stoe :
the release of radioactive material into the atmosphere.
If lar,e amounts of the radioactivity escapes from the Mark 1, some of it could leak outsice j
of the plant.
Using the Mark i design near the Great Laxes could easily i
be an enviromental threat.
j The studies conducted by the NRC worked to find ways to improve the Marx 1 containment structure.
Yet the people who run the plants say the Mark A is adequate.
However, the risk of enviromental problems and the exposure i
of human lives to the raciation remains a problem.
Either a new containmenc structure without problems must be developed, or the Mark i should oe improve l until it tests out one-hundred percent safe.
Thank you for your time.
J I
Sincerely yours, QCL
