- Rainier, Oregon 97048 August 22, 1988 (F') S563713 CAO-291-88 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Soecial ReDort Limiting Condition for Operation (LCO) 3.7.9 of the Trojan Technical Specifications requires submittal of a Special Report if a 3-hour fire barrier is nonfunctional for greater than seven days.

Additionally, LCO 3.7.8.1 of the Trojan Technical Specifications requires submittal of a Special Report if one of the fire pumps is inoperable for more than seven days.

The north wall nf the Auxiliary Building (77' level) was breached for a cable pull in Jdnuary 1988. Inoperability of this wall is being reported late. ihis penetration was not considered to be safety-related then taken out of service; however, the compensatory measures required for safety-related barriors (checking-local smoke detectors and establishing an hourly fire patrol) were established and maintained. This barrier was determined to be safety-related during a review of Trojan fire protection program requirements on July 28, 1988, and was restored to service the same day.

The diesel fire pump was taken out of service for routine preventative maintenance on July 18, 1388. Unexpected problems were found, requiring new parts which were not available. The pump was restored to service on August 4, 1988. A fire truck from the Painier, Oregon, fire department was brought on site and was available as a redundant fire suppression source during the period when the diesel fire pump was inoperable, f6Y

Control Building 'A' and 'B' Battery Room Doors 52 and 53 were previously reported as inoperable on June 23, 1987. It was originally estimated that these barriers would be restored by October 1, 1987; however, additional work on these doors has been found necessary which has delayed their restoration. It is now expected that these doors will be replaced and returned to operable status by October 30, '988.
