U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Vashington, D.C.

20555 Gentlemen Joseph H. Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 1 Seismic Qualification of Electrical Equipment (Generic Letter 87-02)

By letter dated June 23, 1988, Alabama Power Company discussed its plan to address Generic Letter 87-02.

At that time Alabama Power Company was strongly considering resolving Generic Letter 87-02 issues by performing a comparison between Units 1 and 2 of Farley Nuclear Plant.

Since Unit 2 had been reviewed by the NRC during initial Unit 2 licensing and determined to be adequate, this comparison vould demonstrate that Unit 1 is likewise seismically qtialified.

In addition, Alabama Power Company continued to monitor the activities of the Seismic Qualification Utility Group (SOUG) j and maintained this effort as alternative for addressing Generic Letter E'7 -02. Alabama Power Company has nov determined 'that joining S00G and implementing the applicable provisions of the generic resolution under development by:SQUG vould be the most expeditious approach to resolving Generic Letter:87-02 and thus Unresolved Safety Issue A-46, "Seismic j

Qualification of Equipment in Operating Plants."

j l

Alabama Power Company vill respond to the NRC's SER on the SOUG Generic Implementation Procedure on a schedule which is commensurate with the schedule for SQUG member utilities.

If you have any questions, please advise.
