1 REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO: NR-8075-D-801-S DATE:
SEP lllSH PAGE: 2 OF 5 DEVICE TYPE: Density Measurement Unit DESCRIPTION:
The device is designed to measure the density of a liquid as it flows past the radioactive source and detector.
The gauge is fastened to a pipe by two flanged connectors and is mounted in a fixed location.
The overall dimensions of the device are 8.82" (22.4 cm) wide and 13.32" (33.05 cm) in height.
The materials used to house the components of this device are stainless steel with a steel base plate.
The source capsule is located in a lead cylinder and is covered by a titanium foil, pressure-fitted to the lead with an 0-seal.
The lead cylinder is inserted into a steel cylinder and is bolted to the base plate.
The device is inserted into an emulsion pipe and is secured into place by bolts.
In a photographic film and/or paper production process, it will provide a measurement of the silver concentration of an emulsion.
There are no on/off mechanisms or indicators for the source position, as this source is constantly irradiating the emulsion s
solution through the device.
As of September 18, 1995, Agfa disposed of and no longer possessed this device.
LABELING:
A radiation label with the appropriate information and warnings, as specified by 10 CFR 20.1901 and 10 CFR 20.1904, was fixed to the device by adhesive, so as not to penetrate the shielding of the device.
This label was placed on the device at the facility at the time of arrival from Germany.

$[p ] ] Iggg PAGE: 3 OF 5 DEVICE TYPE: Density Measurement Unit CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The environments to which this device is exposed are mildly corrosive.
The device is used as a density meter for the measurement of the silver concentration in photographic emulsion solution.
The emulsion temperature is approximately 100 F (38 C) and has a pH in the range of 5.0 to 6.1. The room temperatur:2 and humidity are typically in the range comfortable to workers.
Personnel may occupy the rooms in which the device is located for a significant part of the work day; however, the device shall be located such that it is not in the immediate vicinity of personnel.
The expected useful life of this device was greater than ten years, which was largely dependent on the electronics.
PROTOTYPE TESTING:
.igfa Corporation did not supply prototype test results regarding mechanical operation (i.e., no specific data on testing of the device). In lieu of such submission, Agfa Corporation referred to the test certificate No. 6.32-3054 issued by the Physiotechnical Federal Institute, a German Agency which states that the construction of the device, Model 40823-01, is approved.
Furthermore, the manufacturer reported that the device has been used in Europe for about 21 years with no reported incidents involving breach of the source or loss of shielding around the device.
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
A dose rate on 0.02 mR/hr (0.2 ySv/hr) was measured by the manufacturer at 3.96" (10 cm) from the device.

OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROLS:
The quality control program related to the manufacture and testing of this device involved a series of tests to determine the integrity of the source capsule.
Three tests were specified:
wipe test, bubble test, and immersion test.
Upon arrival at the licensee's facility, the device was required to be inspected.
A comparison to the manufacturer's specification was required to be conducted at that tine.
The device is also required to be inspected for integrity of the shielding, including seams in the device as it relates to radiation safety.
At the time of receipt, Agfa Corporation was further required to conduct a radiation survey and record activity levels at 5, 30, and 100 cm (1.97", 11.81" and 39.37")
from the surface of the device.
LIMITATIONS AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
- The custom device was only authorized for use by Agfa Corporation, Agfa Photo Division Manufacturing, 8 Henderson Drive, West Caldwell, NJ.
As of December 28, 1995, Agfa's license for possession and use was terminated. Therefore, as of the date of license termination Agfa is no longer authorized to possess this device.
- The custom device was required to be leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable containment.
- Maintenance of the custom device was require to be performed only by a qualified representative of the manufacturer under Agfa Corporation's specific license.
The custom user was not to perform any maintenance on the device that would expose the source or remove any part of shielding of the device.
- The registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.
