Calibration Device DESCRIPTION:
j The Gamma' Industries' Model 1003A and Model 1003M Calibrator Devices are designed to be used as radiation dose calibrators.
The isotope for which they are designed is Strontium-90.
Each i
model is designed to perform as a shipping and storage container j
for'the designated source.
Each is tested or evaluated to meet
' applicable U.S. DOT regulations for Type A shipping containers.
The Modell1003h designates an automated exposure system and the Model 1003M designates a manual system of exposure.
The shield design, source holder and configuration are identical for both lmodels.
]
1 The'Model 1003 calibrator is a device constructed with an outer shell of steel painted with epoxy paint.
The interior (shield) l
.:bs constructed of machined polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and cast lead to provide personnel shielding while the source is in the safe position.
A collimated window is provided with a beam shape of 80* horizontal arc,_with a 30 vertical are such that the radioactive beam is " directional" when the source is exposed.
If the Model 1003A source.i's moved from safe to exposed by an air actuator, which is electrically engaged', on loss of power or air pressure, the source :bs returned to the safe position by gravity and spring pressure.
Source position is indicated on the source
)
control panel electrically. position is determined by two microswitches on the source holder actuator arm.
A green light indicates the. source in the fully.ssfe position, a red light indicates the source in the fully exposed position and an amber light indicates the_ source is"in-an. intermediate position.
The Model 1003A will be used in conjunction with a timer control module which will allow for long exposures to provide high radiation doses for dosimetry calibrations.

REGISTRY OF; RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION'OF DEVICE NO.: NR-300-D-884-S DATE:
SEP 141998 PAGE 3 OF 9 DEVICE-TYPE-Calibration Device DESCRIPTION (Cont'd)-
The Model 1003M is manually operated by pulling a rod to position the' source in the exposed position.
A red marker on the positioning rod' indicates the source is exposed.
The shield material is polyvinyl chloride (PVC) surrounded by 1/8" (3.18 mm), of lead, cylindrical in shape, enclosed in a 2-5/8" (6.67 cm) 0.D.
x 1/8" (3.18 mm) wall carbon steel pipe, 3-7/16" (8.73 cm) long.
The pipe is capped at the top with 1/4" (6.35 mm) thick carbon steel plate, and at the bottom with 3/16" (4. 76 mm) carbon steel plate.
The source is attached to the end of a PVC rod and is stored in a safe position at the bottom of a hole in the PVC shield along the center of the longitudinal (vertical) axis.
The control components include an electrically controlled spring-loaded air actuator and a physical locking mechanism.
These are all. mounted on the top of the vertical cylinder and are housed and protected by a carbon steel bonnet, 7-7/8" (20.00 cm) high x 5"
(12.7 cm) diameter, bolted to the 1/4" (6.35 mm) thick top plate of the shield container.
A steel handle is welded to the top of the bonnet; four holes are drilled in the 1/4" (6.35 mm) plate for the purpose of securing the device to a table, or attaching support legs.
All welding is performed by the tungsten inert gas process.
All enclosure joints are designed for full penetration.
A mechanical locking yoke secures the air cylinder-source rod assembly in a safe position.
An internal spring within the air actuator also maintains the source' rod in a safe position in the absence of electrical power or pneumatic pressure.

Calibration Device PROTOTYPE TESTING (Cont'd)-
Destructive testing was also performed to assure device strength:
Water spray (Exempt-exterior all metal)
Free drop Corner drop tExempt-exterior all metal)
Penetration Compression This device meets all of the applicable requirements in 49 CFR 173.398 (3).
The results of analysis show that the container will withstand free drop, penetration or compression tests and would not allow release of radioactive material, reduction of package effectiveness, or explosion.
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
The device was loaded with a test source of Strontium-90, 20 millicuries (740 MBq) activity.
With the source in the shielded position, maximum radiation exposure levels at the surface were mearurea in the range of 7 to 9 mrem /hr (70 to 90 pSv/hr) in the region of the port.
Measurements at one meter were all less.than 0.1. mrem /hr_(1'pSv/hr).
With the source in the exposed pcsition, exposure levels at one meter, outside the-limits of the direct beam,. ranged from less than 0.1 mrem /hr (1 pSv/hr) to 2.2 mrem /hr (220 pSv/hr).
The
~ maximum exposure level at one meter, in the direct beam, was 120 mrem /hr - (1.2 mSv/hr).
All measurements were made with a Victoreen'471A survey meter.

Calibration Device OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:
Gamma Industries' approved quality control program is incorporated into their manufacturing / distribution license, and includes but is not limited to, the minimum conditions specified in Appendix B of NIST Handbook No. 129, as follows:
Leak and wipe tests Radiation profiles Operational tests Device history records
' Compliance with U.S. DOT Type A packaging requirement, in accordance with Quality Assurance Program NRC-00010, issued to Gamma Industries.
LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
Distribution of these calibrators is limited to users authorized by a specific license.
The device is designed to serve as a U.S. DOT Type A shipping package.
Users concerned with accuracy should have the calibration system calibrated in the operating facility to ensure environmental changes or differences in installation are accounted for.
The source, or accessible locations of the device where contamination would be expected to accumulate, should be leak-tested at 6 month intervals.
Source exchange is not allowed by the user.
These devices are shielded with lead and PVC, which would be expected to deform under a high temperature condition.
Operating and emergency procedures of the specific license should emphasize the use of proper survey instruments whenever using these devices.
