Dear Governo.r Kean:
I am writing to inquire about the State of New Jersey's interest in continued participation in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) State Liaison program. It is my l understanding that Mr. Richard T. Dewing, Commissioner of )
New Jersey's Department of Environmen;;al Protection and your j most recent State Liaison Officer, has vacated his position. I hope you share the Commission's belief in the value of this program and will advise us of your new appointment at an early I date.
In 1976, the NRC adopted a recommendation of State organi-zations, including the National Governors' Association, that we '
request each State to appoint a single person to act as liaison to NRC to improve Federal / State cooperation. The NRC looks to the Governor-appointed State Liaison Officers to provide a communication channel between the States and the NRC; to be the key person in the State to keep the Governor completely informed on regulatory, radiological ptblic health and safety, or other matters of interest to the Governor; to keep other officials within the State informed on regulatory and public health and safety matters as appropriate to their interests and responsibilities; and to provide NRC with answers to questions posed to the States on particular issues.
The individual you select to perform this function can te someone from your staff who can communicate effectively with l other State agencies on nuclear issues. We will keep you l informed of our programs and activities through this i individual. At the same time, we will maintain our ties to those State agencies with whom we have established relationships on specific issues.
