Gentlemen:

We request that you provide a generic evaluation on the feasibility of utilizing "The Nuclear Measurement Analysis and Control Logarithmic Radiation Monitor (NUMAC-LRM)" as developed by General Electric in a reactor neutron monitoring system. Specifically, we are contemplating the replacement of the LACBWR nuclear instruments with the NUMAC instruments.

'On November 16, 1983, General Electric Company (GE) made a presentation to your staff regarding the design of the NUMAC-LRM. Concerns of your staff were addressed and further information of the final NUMAC-LRM design is provided in Reference 2.

We desire to replace the 25-year old nuclear instrumentation in LACBWR with state-of-the-art instruments by September of 1986. It is not contemplated that significant changes would be required in Technical Specifications for LACBWR, therefore a generic ruling on the acceptability of l

the NUMAC system would be desirable.
