DETONATION OF NUCLEAR WEAPON l
A nuclear weapon with a yield of 20 kilotons or less was detonated in the top Nor province of the Peoples Republic of China on September 17, 1977, at 3:00 a.m. EDT. A tentative prediction of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicates that the earliest arrival of fallout would be over northern California at 2:00 a.m. EDT September 21, 1977.
The IE duty officer was notified of the detonation at 12:15 p.m. on September 17, by an ERDA representative. On September 18, NRC regional representatives alerted all operating nuclear power reactors and other nuclear facilities which could be affected by high levels of fallout.
Licensees were not requested to conduct any special sampling and analyses.
NOAA will keep NRC advised of their updated fallout cloud predictions.
NRC staff will keep abreast of the situation but does not plan any further action.
