l l PURPOSE 1

The purpose of this document is to machine one tri-flute from fuel element 10730. After the tri-flute is removed the fuel element will be removed from the reactor core (SOP 9814).

ll PRECAUTIONS l a. The following precautions shall ce observed during all phases of the operation.

1. All equipment and tools removed from the reactor tank shall be checked for contamination.
2. All primary water shall be treated as potentially contaminated.

l

3. All operations in the reactor tank shall be under the direct supervision of a Senior Reactor Operator. '
4. When ever any member of the Operation and/or Health Physics staff has a question about the procedure or operation all work shall cease until the question is answered to their satisfaction or management resolves the matter.

III MACHINING OF TRI-Fl.UTE a.

Position the fuel element such that is aligned with the drill fixture (figure 2),

b. Attach the drill fixture to the %-20-threaded tool and lower it into position as noted on figure 1. When lowering drill fixture slide the center hole over the pole of the fuel element and the locking devices through the upper grid plate. The two locating pins align one of the tri-flutes in the correct orientation to be drilled.

Note: The exact grid location of the drill fixture is not important, as it will fit in any of the six surrounding fuel locations adjacent to fuel element 10730. The alignment of the tri flutes within the drill fixture is more important.

c.

Tighten the bolts on the locking devices to secure the drill fixture to the grid plate.

d. Using a plumb bob, align the drill motor (figure 3) with the drill bushing.
e. Place the drilling assembly through the bushing and attach the assembly to the drill motor (figure 3),
f. Lower the drill motor until the drill bit is just touching the tri-fitte and make a starting mark on the drill motor slide,
g. Start the drill motor and slowly drill the trl-flute to a depth of inches.
h. Remove the drilling assembly and drill fixture, soe um 1

- Raise the fuel element up and remove the remaining outside portion of the tri flute by bending it away from the fuel element. Try to recover the removed portion of the tri-flute. If the trl-flute ends'up on the bottom it will be recovered at a later L date.

J. - After removal of the remaining portion of the tri flute, remove fuel element 10730

l. . from thc reactor core as per SOP 9814.
