Facility: AEC Licensed Firms-Sea Waste Disposal
Subject:
EPA SURVEY OF SITES OF FORMER SEA DISPOSALS OF RADI0 ACTIVE WASTES This preliminary notification is for information only.
The EPA has commenced a survey of a former AEC regulate'd sea disposal site which is located approximately 50 miles off the coast of San Francisco near the Farallon Islands.
The 220 foot Canadian oceanographic vessel,
" Pandora," has been contracted by the EPA to do the survey. The vessel carries the miniature submarine,, " Pisces VI," on its deck which will aid in the survey. An attempt to recover two waste casks from depths of 3,000 and 6,000 feet, respectively, will be made and if successful the i
casks will be sent to Brookhaven National Laboratory for analysis. A second vessel, The University of Southern California's 110. foot "Velero IV,"
l will trawl the surface and the deeper waters of the dump site to recover a variety of fish, plankton, and other organisms for analysis. A second "
i mission is to study ocean currents in the area.
i Approximately 50,000 containers of radioactive waste were dumped in this 220 square mile area between the years 1946 and 1962.
Some of the dis-posals were by the military and by the AEC weapons program, but many of the disposals were by AEC licensed waste disposal firms.
Media interest in the San Francisco Bay Area is high.
No press release is planned.
Region V is not planning direct involvement in this survey.
