PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION September 23, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-77-167

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE st,aff on this date.

SUBJECT:

REACTOR POOL LEAK AND LEAKING FUEL ASSEMBLY This Preliminary Notification is being issued because of local media interest.

Region II was notified by a licensee letter received on August 11, of a leak in the University of Virginia Reactor (UVAR) pool. The leak reported in August was indicated by the need for increased makeup water to maintain constant pool depth. Makeup water for the month of July averaged 450 gallons per day above the normal makeup rate of 210 gallons per day.

On September 6, the reactor was shut down for pool repair. The pool was drained by September 12.

On September 7, a Region II inspector who was at the site was notified that increcsed radioactivity concentration in pool water on that date ~

S indicated a possible leak in fuel cladding.

No radioactivity attributable to the plant has been detected in environmental samples collected since the leak j

occurred. Region II responded to local media inquiries on Sept. ember 22.
