SUBJECT:
NPDES Non-Compliances for Quad-Cities Generating Station IL-0005037 l
Dear Sirs:
l In accordance with Standard Condition 12 we wish to submit the following notice of non-compliances:
01SCHARGE:
001 Radwaste Treatment System Blowdown i
PARAMETER AND PERMIT LIMlT:
Cyanide.
Cyanide is not 1Isted on our permit.
NON-COMPLIANCE AND DATE:
Cyanide 1.4 mg/1.
On 12/9/87 the Radwaste River l
Discharge Tank was sampled and sent to NUS Corp.
l for Analysis for renewal of the Quad Cities NPDES pe rmi t.
CAUSE:
The cause of the non-compliance is unresolved and is still being investigated.
CORRECTIVE ACTION:
Upon notification of the Cyanide result, we immediately contacted various plant and company personnel for possible sources of contamination but could not identify any possible influent sample sources.
We inventoried all the chemicals kept at the plant for anything containing Cyanide. The only chemicals containing Cyanide are used for silverplating electrical equipment.
The quantity on site is <10 oz, and stored

and used in a separate building which would not allow it to enter the Radwaste River Discharge Tank.
The concentration of Cyanide released to the river using the circulating water flow for dilution was 1 PPB.
We sampled another Radwaste River Discharge Tank and sent it to NUS Corp. for Cyanide Analysis.
The results from the Radwaste River Discharge Tank sampled 4/17/88 was 0.006 mg/L Cyanide.
