FOSM Radiation Review

  • Request for NRC Radiation Expert Contact

Dear Dr. Travers:

FOSM has andertaken a review of selected " concerns" related to radiation.

related health and safety issues. The " selected" concerns (see enclosed list and accompanying press release) were called flrom clips / quotes /connnents from NRC hearmas, regional print media, and network / cable television.

The latent of this nview, pursuant to one of FOSM's mission statements, i

is to " bring truth and appropriateness to the public discussions related to i

Millstone Station and health and safety issues involving radiation and nuclear energy". The review will not be original research, however a review and report to the citizens of Southeastern Connecticut of the varied existing data concerning the answen to the identified concerns.

FOSM is reanestian with this__ note, that a NRC radiation expert be made available to FOSM to discuss /make available data / answers towards the end

' of answering the listed concerns. The speci5c genranties which FOSM i

have made to.the public inclade: that the review will be honest; will include "the good, had and (any) ogly"; will indicate any " holes" which exist in available data; and for objectivity and public conndence purposes, FOSM will review data from NU with expert third panies.

The report by FOSM is intended to be disseminated thmughout Southeastern Connecticut as well as discussed at great length with the press. Speaking of the press, they are already forwarding all sorts of resources, data and (their) conclusions to FOSM. It is very clear that the press also wishes to have clear and quotable answers to these concerns, and clear answers once and for all. <Within the context of conclusions the press have arrived at have only been their opinions that amany of these concerns are baseless >

Thank you for assistance in this review and the name of a NRC radiation contact. It is hoped and expected that this FOSM review will become e sonne of truth regarding regional radiation-related health and safety...Thank you, and keep well.

" INITIATIVE FOR TRUTH" ANNOUNCED FOSM UNDERTAKES REVIEW OF RADIATION-RELATED

" CONCERNS" & QUESTIONS - REPORT TO BE ISSUED (East Lyme, Connecticut)

Friends of a Safe Millstone (FOSM) has announced a committement to obtain all available facts concerning health and safety concerns related to radiation and the operation of nuclear power generating facilitics and to widely disseminate the results.

w This committement will first take the ferm of a aview of " concerns" and questions regarding radiation.rclated health and safety issues. (The goal is to present to the public answers to raised issues and concerns). A widespread dissemination of the objective report throughout Southeastern Connecticut is planned at the end of the review period," said Ron McKeown, Founder / Director of FOSM.

"We all deserve to have our health and safety protected, and the right and ability to review actual facts. We intend to make available in a convenient format the answers to the questions raised about nuclear health and safety issues", said McKeown.

"The public, press and interested groups will be invited to analyze all aspects of the report, as well as submit any questions for potential inclusion in the comphrensive review of existing pertinent health and safety dsta ", said McKeown. "FOSM is not undertaking a technical study of radiation and it's impact on us all, FOSM is soliciting and acquiring the availshle technical data and information to address the concerns wh!ch have been asked. FOSM will make the nport available on a large scale to residents of our region, government representatives and community leaders", stated McKeown.

,': h agencies, respected private experts, and report all findings to the publ;c in an objective " plain English" report. (For objectivity purposes, any information provided by Northeast Utilities, will be substantiated by a v

third-party independent expert source).

We will report the ' good, the bad and (any) ugly' facts found, as well as any case wherv there is a lack of scientific data in order to address a specific concern. In the event that " holes" in available data are found, where legitimate radiation concerns are not satisfied, FOSM will press for appropriate research/ action to find the facts to assure the public's health and safety." indicated McKeown.

"We all live in a region with nuclear power generating facilities. We are all neighbors and friends and we must all look out for each other, our children, our future, and our natural resources.

All of us deserve, demand and expect that any nuclear facility must be safe with no serious health, safety or environmental consequences", stated McKeown.

"Over the past year there have been numerous statements of concern and questions raised in the press, media and public meetings, about the impact of the three (3) Northeast Utilities' facilities at Millstone Point. FOSM bas compiled these concerns (see attached), and these issues will serve as the base for the " Initiative for Truth" coordinated by FOSM with the participation of government and private radiation experts", commented McKeown.

McKeown indicated that, "the public is invited to forward to us via phone

<739-3496> or e. mail <fosm@uconect. net > any concern they may have, so q'

that we may include them in our review of available radiation health and safety information". "In addition, if the public wishes a copy of the

" plain-English" report, they should leave their name and address for FOSM via phone or e-mail", indicated FOSM's founder, Ron McKeown.

"This ' Initiative for Truth' is undertaken by FOSM in an attempt to help satisfy one of it's mission statements of " attempting to secure the truth and appropriateness in all aspects of the public discourse regarding nuclear power and Millstone", said McKeown. McKeown indicated FOSM's particular appreciation of various Connecticut residents who have provided the " concerns and questions" which are being addressed by FOSM's

' Initiative for Truth".

"Whether a person is an anti-nuclear pretestor, Millstone employee, or unaffiliated resident, we all yearn for truth, safety and respect for each other. The 'Initative for Truth' is an honest, forthright, and serious probe for the answers which have been raised by our neighbors, our friends, and ourselves. Truth, clarity and fairness is our goal", said McKeown.
