September 27, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNl This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of P_0SSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT INVOLVING SHIPMENT OF YELLOW CAKE This preliminary notification is for information only. -

A Leeway Freight Company tractor-trailer carrying 50 drums of yellow cake for the Exxon Uranium Mill in Wyomir.g overturned near Lamar, Colorado, at 4:00 a.m. on September 27, 1977. Approximately 12 barrels of yellow cake were thrown from the trailer and were reported to have been ruptured.

truck struck three horses and the two occupants of the truck received injurics and are hospitalized at Springfield, Colorado.

Licensee personnel and representatives of the Colorado State Health Depart-ment are enroute to the scene of the accident to recover the uranium and decontaminate the area.

The Springfield Police and news media are aware of the accident and normal accident news coverage can be expected.

DOT has been notified by the licensee.

Region IV (Arlington) received notification of the accident by telephone-from the licensco's RSO at 10:15 a.m. on September 27,197. Region IV

g3 plans no further action.
