PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION N

~

September 19, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-77-161 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of

Facility: Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit No.1 (DN 50-289)

Metropolitan Edison Company, Middletown,, Pennsylvania

Subject:

PLANT SHUTDOWN DUE TO HIGH CONDUCTIVITY IN THE STEAM GENERATORS This PN is issued for information only, no safety implications are involved.

At 3:00 p.m. on September 16, 1977, the unit was shutdown due to high conductivity and low pH in the Steam Generators.

The apparent cause of the chemistry perturbation was an acidic solution introduced from the water treatment system into the main condenser and subsequently into the feedwater system.

The acid caused a low pH condition in th's condenser and feedwater system.

This condition resulted in the high conductivity.

After shutdown the Unit was cooled down and the steam generators were flushed and returned to within operating limits.

Plant heatup is currently in progress. The unit is e'<pected to return to service on September 20, i

1977.

'~

The cause of the release of acid from the water treatment system is e

under investigation. A valving error or a demineralizer resin breakthrough

/

are likely causes.

d Media interest is not expected.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed. This information will be included in a routine, weekly 4

press release made by the licensee.

O NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from Unit Superintendent at 5:15 p.m. on September 16, 1977.
