SUBJECT:
REGION I SAFETY REACTOR ANALYSTS
Dear Mr. Langenbach:
As part of the NRC's probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) implementation plan, the Commission has assigned two Senior Reactor Analysts (SRAs) to each Regional Office.
The SRAs are primarily responsible for incorporating risk insights into the Region I activities. They routinely assess licensee event reports, plant events, inspection findings and enforcement actions from a risk perspective to better focus both your attention and our resources on the more risk significant issues. The SRAs were selected based on their industry and inspection experience and have completed an extensive training program that included both formal classroom training and on-the-job training to develop skills in PRA.
The Si4As in Region I are Tom Shediosky and Jim Trapp.
l l
1 feel that there is a significant benefit to both the industry and the NRC in routinely including risk insights into our daily activities. To improve our ability to provide those insights, I have asked the SRAs to visit each power reactor licensee in Region i during the l
next six months to meet with your PRA staff, to discuss your initiatives in the risk area and to establish a dialog between the SRAs and your PRA staff. I feel that this interface between your staff and our risk analysts will provide a basis for better agreement on the importance of issues on which we routinely interact.
I The SRAs will contact your staff to decide a convenient time to conduct these discussions.
i If you or your staff has questions regarding Region l's efforts to incorporate risk insights j
into our processes, you can reach Tom Shediosky at 610-337 5171(E-mail: JTS@NRC.
l GOV) or Jim Trapp at 610-337-5186 (E-mail: JMT1 @NRC. GOV).
I appreciate your cooperation with us in this matter.
}
Sincerely
