PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE-PNO-77-46 l
This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of I
POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Trojan Nuclear Plant (Docket No. 50-344)
Subject:
Failure of Crankshaft in Diesel-Driven Auxiliary Feedwater Pump The licensee reported to the Region V (Walnut Creek, California) office that while the Trojan plant was in a startup (Mode 2) condition on March 24, 1977, following a planned shutdown for maintenance on March 21, the crankshaft of the diesel-driven auxiliary feedwater pump failed. The licensee s'ubsequently reported that resulting damage to the engine block will necessitate replacement of the diesel ("short l
block") prior to resuming power operation of the Trojan plant.
Arrangements have been made by the licensee to procure a replacement j
diesel unit from the manufacturer - Waukesha of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
f It is expected that a replacement unit will be installed and tested on a schedule which will permit a resumption of -Trojan power operation u =;
during the week of March 28, 1977.
The Region V office will continue to follow and report upon the I
licensee's corrective actions following this occurrence.
A report of this occurrence will be included in the licensee routine weekly release to the news media.
l OIE (Region V) received initial notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Assistant Plant Superintendent at approximately 11:15 a.m. on March 24, 1977. Additional information was provided to
