PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE-PNO-77-60 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information 1
presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
Facility: Three Mile Island Unit No. I Metropolitan Edison Company
~
Subject:
FLOODING OF CIRCULATING PATER PUMPHOUSE With the plant in a refueling shutdown at 12:18 p.m., on April 19, 1977, the housing of a circulating water pump cracked. This caused flooding of the circulating water pumphouse. Electrical power has been discon-nected from the pumphouse and the licensee has called a local fire department to assist in pumping the pumphouse dry. The circulating water system is not safety related. There were no adverse plant safety con-sequences or personnel injuries. The event is expected to delay the restart from the refueling outage by one to two weeks. The cause of the failed housing is being investigated by the licensee.
Media interest is expected because of current hearing status of Three Mile Island, Unit 2 and the involvement of a local fire department. The Common-wealth of Pennsylvania has been informed. A press release is planned by i
NRC.
M NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from an inspector onsite at 1:15 p.m., April 19, 1977.
