This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verifica' tion or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Spillage of Refueling Water Storage Tank Water Into Auxiliary Building Basement The licensee reported to Region V (Walnut Creek, California) inspectors, upon their arrival on site on May 9, the inadvertent spillage of approximately 50,000 gallons of water from the Refueling Water Storage Tank (RWST) into the basement of the Auxiliary Building.
The spillage occurred on the graveyard shift on May 7, when a manway gasket failed on an ion-exchange demineralizer tank through which the RWST water was being circulated for cleanup.

The water, which had a radioactive concentration of approximately one microcurie per milliliter, accumulated at a depth of approximately t.wo feet in the basement of the auxiliary building. There were no significant personnel exposures or contaminations and no release offsite from the occurrence. The plant is currently shutdown for scheduled maintenance, and will resume operation in early June.
Cleanup, by pump,ing and thorough swabbing of floors, is expected to be completed on May 10.
No equipment within the auxiliary building was disabled by the occurrence. Region V inspectors are examining details of the occurrence while on site for a routine inspection.
The licensee has not yet made notice to the news media, however they plan to cover this occurrence, as well as a similar occurrence
